Guru Nanak visited various sites across the world to help people understand the real meaning of life and help them come out of the fake beliefs and superstitions. On Guru Nanak Dev Ji's visit to the Haridwar city situated on the banks of river Ganges, Guru Ji saw people throwing water towards the rising sun.
On asking the Brahmins what they were doing, Brahmins replied that they are giving water to their ancestors. They gave water towards east to the rising sun because their ancestors feel thirst due to sun's heat. After knowing this Guru Nanak Dev Ji started giving water towards the opposite direction, that is west. This suddenly attracted the attention of the Brahmins giving water towards east. Some of the Brahmins started gathering around Guru Nanak and asked why he was doing so? Guru Nanak Dev Ji told them that he was giving water to his crops in Punjab. Brahmins said that how can your water reach around four hundred miles from here? Guru Nanak said that if my water cannot reach my crops than how can it reach to the people that do not even exist in this world? A wave of shock was felt across the crowd and many of them realized that what they were doing is wrong. Most of the Brahmins in the crowd realized that the water they were throwing towards sun was going nowhere but coming back to the river. In this way, Guru Nanak Dev Ji removed the superstitions from the minds of the people of Haridwar.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji helped people during their journey to realize the existence of one formless God. Guru Nanak spread the truth and the word of one universal creator and formless God. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught people the meaning of life, to remember God, to live as active members of society. Guru Nanak Dev Ji helped in removing social evils like caste distinctions. Guru Nanak Dev Ji made people quit idol worship, belief in forms of God and other fake beliefs.
